Two pieces of news on Downy Mildews during this rainy season

Downy Mildew on Hops and Downy Mildew on Basils are actually two different diseases, but each can be quite devastating to their respective crops. Unfortunately, the prolonged leaf wetness resulting from heavy rains this season has increased the possibility of these diseases, along with many other plant diseases. This week, there is bad news about the arrival of Hops Downy Mildew, but some good news about some new basil varieties bred to be resistant to Basil Downy Mildew.

For the bad news about Hops Downy Mildew being present, see:

Downy Mildew Confirmed on Hops in Western North Carolina

Though the above article links to two further, excellent articles on managing Hops Downy Mildew, the spray recommendations are mostly conventional. For anyone attempting to keep their hops to organic production standards, some information about organic fungicide efficacies (or lack thereof) can be found here:

Information on Downy Mildew

Regarding the better news about new varieties of basil showing resistance to Basil Downy Mildew, see this Rutgers Press Release:

Rutgers Scientists Develop New Varieties of Sweet Basil

Note that these basil varieties are only available to commercial growers at present, but hopefully will reach garden catalogs and nurseries by the 2019 season.
